I send out my weekly Principal Notes to keep you up to date on what’s going on in the school. I include information about special programs, upcoming events, opportunities for students and/or parents to get involved, student recognitions, and calendar items. I provide links to additional information, which can usually also be found on the St. Susanna School website (SaintSusannaSchool.com) under “Latest News”. This serves as our weekly electronic school newsletter and is our main method of communication. I recommend creating a file on your email account called “school” to drop these messages in, as well as correspondence from your child’s teacher. That way, you can easily access this information at a later time, and they won’t get lost in your inbox. Just a suggestion!
Thank you to everyone who participated in our Thanksgiving Food Drive last week. The food pantry was impressed by the number of donations they received on such short notice. Thanks to your generosity, families were able to get much-needed food this past weekend! Thanks for showing your goodness and letting your lights shine!
This year, our 8th-grade students participated in the We the People program. Sponsored by the Indiana Bar Foundation and the Center for Civic Education, We the People is a program of constitutional study that prepares students to be active citizens. Our students learned about topics ranging from political theory and republican government to the compromises that made our constitution possible. The program culminates with a mock congressional hearing. Last week, we hosted St. Malachy’s 8th grade for a mock hearing in our parish center.
We would like to thank our panel of judges which included our own Mrs. Jennifer Andres, an attorney with IU Health, and Mr. Shane Authenreith, a Plainfield high school graduate who participated on one of Plainfield’s national We the People Teams. We were joined by Mr. Ed Hannon, an attorney with Steuerwald, Hannon, and Witham in Danville, Indiana. Also thank you to Mrs. Abdoulaye for preparing our students.
Our 8th graders presented their prepared papers to Mr. Hannon and Mrs. Andres. Their papers, focused on the Declaration of Independence and the Philadelphia Convention, were presented orally to the judges. Each group then answered follow up questions from the judges to demonstrate their depth of knowledge on the topics. Both Mr. Hannon and Mrs. Andres had excellent feedback on our students’ performance. We are very proud of their efforts and look forward to future participation in this program!
