The Advent and Christmas seasons are enhanced by music… especially music performed by children!  St. Susanna’s award-winning band performed on December 11.  While over half of the band have only been playing a short time, they did a great job – especially on the piece of music Mr. Dutcher handed out for the first time at the concert!  The few members of the middle school hand bells choir who could make the performance nailed a version of “Jingle Bells”.

December 13 was our final concert of 2017.  Our Kindergarten through 4th graders and Children’s Choir sang – and danced – beautifully.  5thgraders played songs on recorders, and the packed-house audience can confidently claim that they attended a “Boomwhacker” concert!  Our kids really let the spirit of Chirstmas shine through their songs!

The December Mission was led by our 2nd graders, who collected nearly $300 to purchase toys for “Kelley’s Angels”.  Some second graders and their parents had a great time shopping for other children!  Check out pictures on our Facebook page!  This toy drive helps fulfill the dream of Kelley DeNardin that no child will go without a gift underneath the tree on Christmas.  A big “thank you” to everyone who participated in this mission!

Our St. Susanna 4th graders led the school in a prayer service for the second week of Advent.  We are so blessed to be able to gather as a school community to remind everyone of the anticipation of the birth of Christ!  Today at 3:05, the 5th graders will lead us in prayer for the 3rd week of Advent.  Everyone is welcome to park in carpool and join us!

Middle School Engineers:  Our middle school students researched, designed, and built bridges as part of a STEM lesson in science class.  They then tested the strength of their structures by piling on textbooks.  The kids even analyzed pieces when the bridge broke to see what modifications they could make to reinforce and improve their structures.  Great science minds at work!

Santa Shop is a great St. Susanna tradition that kids love!  Our students were able to shop for family members – and themselves – in the Parish Center while volunteers helped them make their selections.  A huge “thank you” to Heidi Kruggel and her team of “elves” who helped with set up, shopping, and clean-up.

Our 8th graders hosted a Drop-in Movie Night for St. Susanna Students on Friday.  About 40 students enjoyed “The Polar Express on a giant inflatable screen, munched on popcorn and pizza, and made ornaments or colored Christmas pictures.  It was a fun night for kids and an opportunity for parents to have an evening out.  Thank you to all who participated and helped support our 8th graders’ class trip!

Spartan Spirit Awards for week of December 11:  Hadlee Hammond, Zach Daum, Olivia Rhoderick, Isabel Palanca, Ann Chlupacek, Izzy Bedel, Aleia Williams, Elizabeth Ellis, Savannah Acker, Kendra Dick, Trenton Cutshall, Kaden Christian.  Keep letting your lights shine!

Student News: Owen and Eli Gessner received certificates of recognition for their service to Indy Honor Flight by the president and Chairman of the Board. This program honors veterans by flying them to Washington, DC, so they may experience the monuments honoring their service to our country.

Do you have any good news to share?  Anything our students or graduates have accomplished?  Please let me know how students and graduates are letting their lights shine! Michele Tillery 317-839-3713, ex 138 or mtillery@saintsusanna.com.
